Psoriasis, a chronic, inflammatory skin disease, can have a significant negative effect on quality of life of patients. However, there are many diseases that can be positively affected by changes in routine, lifestyle, and diet. In this review published in JAMA Dermatology, researchers aim to identify what the dietary interventions are in patients with psoriasis and/or psoriatic arthritis, in order to reduce their disease severity.

This review used 55 studies and 4,534 patients with psoriasis to identify the strongest evidence for dietary weight reduction with a hypocaloric diet in overweight and obese patients with psoriasis. Literature from existing systematic reviews, as well as additional primary literature from the MEDLINE database, were used from January 1, 2014, to August 31, 2017; the studies used in this review were observational and interventional studies of patients with psoriasis or psoriatic arthritis.

Results of the review showed that weight reduction with a hypocaloric diet in overweight and obese patients with psoriasis is strongly recommended. In patients who test positive for serologic markers of gluten sensitivity, a gluten-free diet is weakly recommended. Based on the low-quality data available for this review, researchers assessed that select foods, nutrients, and dietary patterns may affect psoriasis. “Adults with psoriasis and/or psoriatic arthritis can supplement their standard medical therapies with dietary interventions to reduce disease severity,” the researchers concluded. “These dietary recommendations from the National Psoriasis Foundation Medical Board will help guide clinicians regarding the utility of dietary interventions in adults with psoriatic diseases.”
