Supportive Care after Prostate Cancer Treatment: Study Highlights Unmet Needs

What supportive care do men need after prostate cancer treatment? A study from researchers in Norway sought to evaluate the specific needs of this population by evaluating patients, their physicians, and relevant cancer organizations.

The researchers found four emergent themes:

• Men with PCa have numerous needs for information, which should be optimally provided throughout process of cancer care and treatment.
• Stakeholders must coordinate their efforts to support men with PCa during follow-up.
• Supportive care resources are supplemental to healthcare services, but knowledge about these resources is variable.
• Structured healthcare processes are needed to improve and optimize care offered to men with PCa.

Mayo Clinic Advocates new Approach to Breast Cancer Prevention

Researchers from Mayo Clinic Cancer Center suggest that advances in breast cancer prevention research have resulted in enhanced opportunities to modify breast cancer risk and potentially reduce breast cancer incident and death. “It is prudent for health care providers to be knowledgeable about the benefits of assessing individual breast cancer risk, and counsel and implement risk-reducing strategies with their patients,” says author Sandhya Pruthi, MD.

Artificial Intelligence May Speed Lung Cancer Detection

Artificial intelligence (AI) may help diagnose lung cancer a year earlier than current practice, according to a study presented at the European Respiratory Society International Congress. Researchers assessed their novel AI technology on 1,179 lungs. The system detected 75 percent of all annotated nodules. Examining scans one year prior to diagnosis, the algorithm detected 152 malignant nodules among the 157 visible nodules.
