Studies Find Connection Between Age and Melanoma Treatment Resistance

Two studies have directly linked mechanisms of aging to melanoma spread and treatment resistance. Melanoma cells cultured with fibroblasts from older patients consistently increased uptake of fatty acids from the environment in and around the tumor, providing the cancer protection from cell death. Researchers also found that older patients showed decreased expression of the angiogenesis-promoting gene VEGF, which the drug Avastin is designed to block.

When It Comes to Pediatric Cancer Symptoms, Who Should We Listen To: Caregivers or Children?

Caregivers for pediatric patients with cancer may not be able to report patients’ symptoms as accurately as the children themselves, according to a study. Caregivers were found to report a higher symptom burden than the children. In their conclusion the researchers recommended that “elicitation of the child’s own report should be pursued whenever possible.”
