Thompson, 50, was at his hotel at approximately 6:45, arriving early for a conference, when a masked gunman allegedly waiting for him fired at him repeatedly, striking him in the chest. Thompson was rushed to Mt. Sinai hospital in critical condition, and was later pronounced dead.

According to Andrew Witty, CEO of parent company UnitedHealth group, the firm was holding its Investor Day conference at the hotel on Wednesday, which Thompson was set to attend. Owing to what was a called “a very serious medical situation”, that conference was called off.

No arrests have been made so far in this heinous act, but police provided a profile of the suspect. He is described as a white male wearing a cream-colored jacket, black face mask, and black and white sneakers. He was said to be carrying a gray backpack.

Thompson had worked with UnitedHealth for the last 20 years and assumed the role of CEO in 2021.

“Brian’s experience, relationships and values make him especially well-suited to help UnitedHealthcare improve how health care works for consumers, physicians, employers, governments and our other partners, leading to continued and sustained long-term growth,” Witty said via a New York Post article.
