Rule Proposed by CMS Would Increase Payments to Dialysis Providers

On June 27, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) issued a proposed rule to update payment rates and policies under the End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) Prospective Payment System (PPS). The proposed rule would increase the ESRD PPS base rate to $273.20, resulting in a pay increase of about 2.2% for providers of renal dialysis services in 2025.

In addition, the rule proposes an update to requirements for the ESRD Quality Incentive Program, an update to the acute kidney injury (AKI) dialysis payment rate for renal dialysis services furnished by ESRD facilities for 2025, and to extend Medicare payment to dialysis in the home setting for beneficiaries with AKI. The proposed rule also offers information on how CMS will operationalize the inclusion of oral-only drugs in the ESRD PPS payment starting in 2025.
