Silvi Shah, MD, will receive the 2024 Dr. Nanette K. Wenger Research Goes Red Award at the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions 2024, taking place November 16-18 in Chicago, Illinois.
The award is named in honor of Nanette K. Wenger, MD, who was a pioneer in women’s cardiovascular disease medicine. The Dr. Nanette K. Wenger Award is given annually to recognize the best research article(s) focused on cardiovascular disease and stroke in women published during the previous year in any of the American Heart Association’s peer-reviewed, scientific journals. The Research Goes Red initiative aims to empower women to contribute to health research.
Dr. Shah is an associate professor of nephrology and hypertension at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in Cincinnati, Ohio. Her research interests include kidney disease, sex disparities in kidney disease, cardiovascular disease, and women’s health with kidney disease, especially during pregnancy.
Dr. Shah will be recognized for her article, “Sex Differences in Cardiovascular Outcomes in Patients With Kidney Failure,” which was published in the Journal of the American Heart Association.
In the study, she and her co-authors reviewed Medicare claims data for more than 500,000 adults receiving dialysis for end-stage kidney disease. The analysis found women with kidney failure had higher risks of cardiovascular events, including heart failure and stroke, but a lower risk of cardiovascular death compared to males in the database.
Dr. Shah’s research suggests doctors should reevaluate how they approach prevention and education on heart disease and stroke, as well as promote healthy living for women who have end-stage kidney disease and receive dialysis.
