The ABIM Maintenance of Certification Saga Continues

By Chadi Nabhan, MD, MBA - Last Updated: April 16, 2024

Dr. Aaron Goodman, who initiated a petition that gathered over 20,000 signatures to end the Maintenance of Certification program in July 2023, found himself suddenly listed as “not certified” in hematology, the specialty he practices and teaches, by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). When Dr. Goodman contacted the ABIM, he was told he needed to pay thousands of dollars in back fees for the Internal Medicine Board he did not want to keep, as he is a specialist in bone marrow transplant and hematology. The ABIM advised that unless he pays these fees, he will be deemed “not certified,” which threatens his ability to see patients at his own institution. Dr. Goodman spoke with Dr. Chadi Nabhan about this latest saga and what comes next.
