How Guidelines Lead to Consistency of Care

Jafna Layth Cox, MD, of the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Ctr in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, talks with DocWire News about the importance of guidelines for the consistency of care for today’s physicians.

Dr. Cox presented results of a recently completed study (IMPACT-AF) of the efficacy of electronic clinical decision support in patients with atrial fibrillation at this year’s American Heart Association Scientific Sessions. The presentation also looked at how decision support tools such can lead to more consistent level of care for patients.

IMPACT-AF was a cluster randomized, controlled trial, conducted in the primary care setting of Nova Scotia. Providers, the level of intervention, were randomized, stratified by practice location (urban or rural), to usual care or intervention with the clinical decision support system. A total of 203 providers and 1146 of their patients were enrolled in the study.
