Heart Care Disparities Between Black and White Patients Persist: Analysis
According to the results of this study, those in racial or ethnic minority groups received fewer early treatments (such as coronary angiographies, percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Rates of coronary angiography were found to be 61.95% for Black patients, 70.2% for other groups, and 73.1% for white patients, while PCI rates were 44.6% for Black patients, 53.0% for others, and 58.1% for white patients, respectively. The authors also reported longer hospital stays, higher rates of palliative care consults, less frequent do-not-resuscitate orders, and fewer home discharges among Black patients

Consuming Nuts Linked with Reduced Inflammation in Older Adults
According to results of this study of more than 600 adults, compliance with the walnut-rich diet was high, and there were no reported changes in patient body weight. The walnut diet was associated with significant reductions in the concentrations of six of 10 inflammatory biomarkers compared with the control diet. “Walnuts have an optimal mix of essential nutrients like the omega-3 alpha-linolenic acid, or ALA (2.5g/oz), and other highly bioactive components like polyphenols2, that likely play a role in their anti-inflammatory effect and other health benefits,” one author explained.

Depression and Cardiovascular/Cerebrovascular Events Linked?
This study sought to compare trends in CVD prevalence, and in-hospital outcomes in young adults with and without depression. They evaluated baseline demographics, comorbidities, all-cause mortality, acute myocardial infarction (AMI), percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI), arrhythmia, stroke, and venous thromboembolism (VTE) among hospitalized young adults between the ages of 18-39 with vs. without depression from 2007 to 2014. The depressed cohort showed higher rates of comorbidities, all-cause mortality, PCI, arrhythmia, VTE, and stroke, according to the results.

No Link Between PAD and Post-EVT Outcomes
A team of Dutch researchers established the prospective MR CLEAN registry to compare EVT outcomes in acute stroke patients with and without PAD. The investigators looked at 2,765 patients treated with EVT for an anterior large artery occlusion, of which 9.2% participants (n=254) had PAD. Collaterals were scored on a 4-point scale using computed tomography (CT) angiography. After adjustment for confounding factors, a multivariable regression analysis found no association of PAD with functional outcome (mRS cOR 0.90, 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.7–1.2), collateral grades (cOR 0.85, 95% CI 0.7–1.1), or safety outcomes.
