Assessing the Prevalence of Aortic Stenosis in Patients With Wild-Type Transthyretin Amyloidosis

One in 10 patients with wild-type transthyretin amyloidosis (ATTRwt) will also have aortic stenosis (AS), according to a study being presented at the International Symposium on Amyloidosis 2024, taking place May 26-30 in Rochester, Minnesota.

Researchers sought to “describe the prevalence of moderate-severe AS in patients with ATTRwt amyloidosis and the clinical features, echocardiographic characteristics, and clinical course of these patients.” To conduct this retrospective, cohort study, they analyzed 104 patients (median age, 82 years; 89% men) with ATTRwt amyloidosis from November 2007 to May 2021. Researchers assessed clinical characteristics between the groups to discern which study subjects had moderate-severe AS.

They found that at the time of ATTRwt amyloidosis diagnosis, 10.5% of patients had moderate-severe AS. Patients with AS were older (P=.05) and had numerically higher NT-ProBNP values and numerically lower ejection fraction, with nonstatistically significant differences, compared with patients without AS. Most patients were subclassified as low flow-low gradient severe AS.
